Workshop: Critical Sound Writing

Led by writer and researcher Jennifer Lucy Allan, this workshop will look at how we write about and engage with sound through text. It will explore various forms of sound writing, looking at how we can translate what we hear into critically engaged responses. It aims to combine practical writing skills such as editing, subbing, and structure with a broader interrogation of the ways we can successfully use text to develop a critical writing practice through research, form, and experimentation.

Jennifer Lucy Allan is a writer and researcher, specialising in experimental and underground music. Previously, she was online editor at The Wire, and now contributes regularly to The Guardian, The Wire and The Quietus. She is currently working on a social and cultural history of the foghorn, and leads the Hackney Citizen’s music writing course in London and the Sonic Acts Critical Writing Workshop. She is co-founder of the reissues record label Arc Light Editions, and is a core member of Laura Cannell’s Modern Ritual collective.
