Artist Information

Tomoko Sauvage

Tomoko Sauvage is a Japanese musician and artist active since mid 2000’s. She investigates the sculpturality of sound and improvisation in relation to the environment. Mainly known for a musical / visual research about ‘natural synthesizer’ of her own invention which she composed with diverse fluid, bowls, ceramic, light and underwater amplification. Sauvage’s approach is attached to questions of alchemy, meditation and balance between hazard and mastery. Under the form of performances, installations and musical compositions, her work is regularly presented in Europe, Asia and America.

Pan Daijing, Valerio Tricoli & Werner Dafeldecker ▸ The Speaker

An innovative composition for spoken language, six onstage loudspeakers and live electronics, The Speaker can be seen as a form of ‘aural theatre’ or preformative piece of ‘musique concrète’ exploring the interlocking themes of solipsism, paranoia and identity.

Pan Daijing is a performance and sound artist born and raised in southwest China, currently based in Berlin.  She has undertaken residencies at Foundazione Prada Venice, presenting commissioned piece at Shanghai’s Rockbund Museum and performed at Berlin’s Volksbuehne. Her music combines ecstatic power electronics with cinematic atmospherics and sexual charge and an overriding commitment to the exploration of the links between sound and body.

Valerio Tricoli works as a concrete music composer, improviser, sound installation artist, producer, sound engineer and curator. His compositions bridge musique concrète and conceptual forms of sound. According to Tricoli, music – as a recorded or as a synthetically-modeled sound – is always hovering between the ‘here and now’ of the event and the shady domain of memory – distant but at the same time present, like a déjà–vu experience.

Werner Dafeldecker was born in Vienna in 1964 and studied the double bass. As a musician, composer and sound artist he takes advantage of the manifold possibilities offered by electro-acoustics. Werner also focuses on site specific projects, field recording and opposing natural and environmental sounds with synthetic variants. He has built up an extensive sound archive and created several electroacoustic pieces for radio and film.

Sarah Davachi

Sarah Davachi (b. 1987, Calgary, Canada) holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Calgary, and a master’s degree in electronic music and recording media from Mills College in Oakland, California. As a composer of electronic and electroacoustic music, Davachi’s compositional projects are primarily concerned with disclosing the antiquated instruments and forgotten sonics of a bygone era in analog synthesis, with concurrent treatment of acoustic sources – particularly organ, piano, strings, and woodwinds – often involving de-familiarization through processing. Her work considers the experience of enveloped sonic dwelling, utilizing extended durations and simple harmonic structures that emphasize variations in overtone complexity and psychoacoustic artefacts.

Ellen Arkbro

Ellen Arkbro (b. 1990, Stockholm) is a composer and sound-artist working with intervallic harmony in just intonation. Her work includes long duration compositions as well as continuous sound environments, employing both acoustic traditional instruments as well as algorithmic sound synthesis. In 2017, Arkbro released for organ and brass on Subtext Recordings, a set of recordings of her compositions for renaissance organ, horn, trombone and microtonal tuba. Most recently, Arkbro has presented new work in concert for solo organ and electronics.

Agnes Hvizdalek

Agnes Hvizdalek originates from Vienna’s experimental music scene and has been based in Oslo since 2008. From an early age, she has dedicated her life to new music and her fascination with the human voice. She celebrates this in her abstract vocal music, for which she has received international acclaim.

Always exploring new horizons, Hvizdalek has engaged in numerous cross-disciplinary collaborations merging voice and visual and performance art, dance, theatre, film and writing. Her musical collaborations range from underground noise music and Jazz to classical contemporary music and experimental electronic and pop music.

Daichi Yoshikawa / Jean-Luc Guionnet

Daichi Yoshikawa is an improvising musician from Japan who has spent considerable time in London and Berlin working with a self-devised feedback setup of portable speakers and contact microphones that generates a constant vibration which he controls with resonate objects. He is also a member of lll人 (with Seymour Wright and Paul Abbott) and Nakasanye/наказание (with Antonin Gerbal and Joel Grip)

Jean-Luc Guionnet‘s practice is subdivided into as many parts as occasions arise for him to think and act in sound and image. A Parisian artist active in several fields (music, visual arts, cinema), he has worked mostly  in electro-acoustics but also has a career in free improvisation and field recording, playing alto saxophone, soprano saxophone, church organ, and electric organs. He studied musique concrète under Iannis Xenakis and tends to extract the tiniest details from sound, appreciating slowness and the obsessive exploration of simple processes. Music, for him, is a way to test reality.

The duos first record ‘Intervivos’ will be released by Empty Editions.

Tyshawn Sorey Trio

Composer/drummer Tyshawn Sorey is widely considered to be among the most important young artists at the intersection between composed and improvised music. The Wall Street Journal has called him “a composer of radical and seemingly boundless ideas” and Stereogum called his latest release, The Inner Spectrum of Variables “a genuine masterwork, something entirely new.” He is one of the most in-demand drummers on the modern jazz scene — known for his impossibly virtuosic technique and his mind-boggling ability to effortlessly master even the most difficult written scores — but is also one of a rare breed of jazz musicians who is pursuing composition as seriously as their playing. He received his Doctorate in Musical Arts in Composition from Columbia University in May, 2017 and has recently been appointed as professor at Wesleyan University.
